New report on public health and homeland security

Filed under: Organizational Issues,State and Local HLS — by Christian Beckner on January 5, 2006

Washington Technology reports this morning on a new report by the National Governors Association entitled “State Strategies for Fully Integrating Public Health into Homeland Security.

The general argument of the report, that public health entities need to be integrated into state homeland security organizations, is sensible and becoming more important given the potential avian flu risks. And the report provides some good examples of what various states have done to integrate public health activities, in terms of governance, planning, training and intelligence.

A useful next step in this analysis would be the benchmarking of various states’ homeland security offices and their integration with public health activities, to move beyond anecdotal evidence and determine a model approach.
