DHS: It’s spelled “Al-Qaeda”

Filed under: DHS News — by Christian Beckner on May 15, 2006

From the internal DHS Today newsletter:

Executive Secretary’s Office Provides Proper Spelling of “al-Qaeda” for DHS Use

The DHS Office of the Executive Secretariat has announced that any written material by DHS components should contain the correct form al-Qaeda, and that the term is being officially added to the DHS Lexicon repository.

According to the Executive Secretariat’s office, the DHS Lexicon project is in the business of cutting through conflicts in terms, be they spelling, definitions, or usage. After seeing various spellings of the term and getting input from various parts of the department, the office called in an expert from the State Department who confirmed that references to the terrorist organization should be spelled al-Qaeda.

I’m glad we got that clarified.
