New CRS report looks at homeland security in Europe

Filed under: International HLS — by Christian Beckner on August 2, 2006

The Congressional Research Service released a new report last week (available for the first time online here at HLS Watch) that looks at approaches to homeland security and counterterrorism in six countries – Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK:

RL33573: European Approaches to Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, July 24, 2006

It’s a very informative report, comparing how these six countries have faced the same challenges that the United States has addressed over the past five years, and looking at ways in which their responses have evolved following the attacks in Madrid and London. The report also makes an effort to assess the level of spending on “homeland security” in each of these countries, a difficult task given the fact that this spending falls across multiple agencies and departments in each country, but one that ultimately sheds some light on the relative level of spending in several of the countries.
