Senate confirms new DHS S&T head

Filed under: DHS News,Technology for HLS — by Christian Beckner on August 4, 2006

According to yesterday’s Congressional Daily Digest, Rear Adm. Jay Cohen was confirmed as Under Secretary of Science & Technology for DHS on Thursday. His confirmation sets the stage for the expected reorganization of S&T, which I expect now will transpire soon.

If my understanding is correct this Naval Academy Grad inherits and organization that did not know the difference between basic and applied research. Instead of making a difference, the S&T Directorate failed to provide leadership for the civil agencies and its own department on what should have been a keystone operation. Well, let’s hope for improvement.
I have requested the NAS/NSF to do a roundable on the S&T Directorates past, present and future contributions. Hope this happens because these guys have definitely been hiding out from anyone with ideas that might be of interest to those who see science and technology as a must have side of anti-terrorism/counter-terrorism and not just nice to have.
