New space strategy mentions homeland security mission

Filed under: Technology for HLS — by Christian Beckner on October 11, 2006

Washington Technology had a story on Tuesday that noted the fact that the new National Space Policy – updated for the first time since 1996 – mentions an explicit role for the government’s space-based assets in the homeland security mission.

These references to homeland security in the document are somewhat vague, which is understandable for a 10-page document. One mission area where space assets can potentially be deployed is border security; indeed, many of the proposals for the SBINet project considered the use of space-based assets. Two other mission areas where more thought needs to be given to the use of space-based assets is improved situational awareness for emergency response, and maritime domain awareness.
