Homeland Security This Week

Congress is in recess.  Secretary Napolitano has just finished a long road-trip.  The President is finishing his road-trip in Turkey. The cherry blossoms peaked last week. With most of their target audience out-of-town, the think tanks have mostly stopped thinking (or at least talking).  Washington D.C. events are at a minimum.  What is happening this week beyond the beltway? Monday, April 6

1:30 pm (eastern)  Secretary Gates is expected to announce his proposal for Defense budget cuts.

Tuesday, April 7

In many regions, early April is the start of wildfire awareness campaigns.  Destructive wildfires in Texas, California, and Virginia and  have reinforced the threat.  A recent scientific study predicts “more and larger wildfires.”  (Wildfire Awareness Weeks tend to start early in Texas and New Mexico and later in California and the Pacific Northwest.)

Wednesday, April 8

10:00 am (eastern) CSIS hosts a seminar on informational challenges of a changing climate.

12:00 noon (eastern) The Heritage Foundation hosts a panel discussion on robotic vehicle development and its application to America’s security.
