CSU predicts “average” hurricane season

Filed under: Preparedness and Response,Risk Assessment — by Philip J. Palin on April 7, 2009

Hurricane forecasters at Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project expect the 2009 season to include 12 Named Storms, 6 hurricanes, and 2 intense hurricanes.  The complete April 7 report is available as a pdf.  NOAA will release its forecast in May.

The 2008 hurricane season featured 16 Named Storms and 8 hurricanes.  Five of those hurricanes attained CAT3 intensity or higher.  Last year had the fourth highest number of Named Storms since 1944 (when air reconnaissance of tropical storms began.)
