OK! OK! It's obvious that none of you are aware that the whole Zombie issue has been taken care by Miss Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith. (see http://www.amazon.com/Pride-Prejudice-Zombies-Classic-Ultraviolent/dp/1594743347 ) Often we need to return to the 'classics' to discover the wisdom needed for the present.

Given the existential threat zombies represent, the lack of attention to zombie identification and detection would appear to verge on homeland security malpractice. So, we must attack these lethal adversaries frequently and aggressively? Fine. How do we know whom and when to shoot? Will we rely on nascent but undeployed zombie detectors placed at, say, grocery stores, blood banks, ATMs, and sporting venues? Will we tie our hands pending arrival of a technological solution, or will we begin by calling on trained professionals, such as TSA screeners or (thinking out of the box, here, given the seriousness of the crisis) college athlete recruiters, census workers, and night club bouncers to exploit their people skills and assessment expertise by taking the lead in national zombie detection? The American people deserve some answers.

All I have to say is: Mr. Bellavita, just on the strength of your last comment, if we are ever in the same town, the first round is on me.

Okay, maybe not all I have to say...there has been a few follow up articles to this zombie work if anyone is interested. While on the surface it seems like a simple flight of fancy, there actually might be some insights to not only this mathematical exploration, but some of the more qualitative follow up work as well that is broadly applicable to homeland security.

College of the Canyons definitely rocks. (http://www.canyons.edu/) And people think California education is losing its edge. Humbug.

To Esposito -- John, you're showing your Gregorian bias. It's only April 1st for some people. It's actually the 17th of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar (or the 2nd day of Omer, as you will recall.), and 25th of Dhul-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar. Hlswatch seeks an international audience. We would not presume to confuse our readers by assuming something called "April Fools Day" had planetary meaning.

And here I thought the recent tremors in the Economics Profession caused by quantitative analysis that miserably failed the FIRE sector of the economy and the rest of US with it had been confined. Now HS is also victimized by the quants. Of course the analysis underlying this comment is intuition not just April Fool's day.
