Supply and Demand

Filed under: General Homeland Security — by Mark Chubb on September 1, 2010

I paid little attention to the rally on the National Mall over the weekend besides noting that Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin had managed to invoke the ire of those who consider the selected date and venue sacred. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 1963 March on Washington and “I Have a Dream” speech at the same venue marked a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement and as such altered the arc of our nation’s history. I doubt Beck and Palin’s performance will affect much of anything despite the large number of angry, white, middle-aged and older people who turned out for a picnic in the park.

Among the few snippets of the speeches I caught, one remark from Beck stood out. At one point or another he is quoted as having said, “Faith is in short supply.” This statement presumably underscored his message that the nation needs to turn back to God, or at least the one Beck and Palin profess to worship.

Admittedly, my lack of rapt attention to Beck and Palin in this instance may lead me to taking this remark out of context, but I cannot help but question the premise itself. How can faith be in short supply?

The same neo-conservatives who support Beck profess almost limitless confidence in individuals and markets to make decisions without direction or assistance from government. As such, it seems absurd to me that they should confuse faith with a commodity like say pork bellies or petroleum. If  faith is actually in short supply, might that not suggest that individuals have inadequate need of it?

Under conditions of scarcity when demand remains robust prices rise. Has the price of faith gone up? If so, why have those with faith to spare refused to offer their surplus to others? Or is this what we were supposed to see in the weekend’s activities?

Beck and Palin seem to be suggesting something more sinister than the usual fluctuations of supply and demand are at work. They would have us believe that the market for faith has been altered or impeded by government intervention. According to this narrative, the Obama administration has placed restrictions on our national reserves of faith, leaving it unavailable to the market at any price. Efforts to expand access to health care, stem economic collapse, protect consumers from Wall Street and banking industry abuses, and work to curtail the proliferation of nuclear weapons, they want us to believe, are the work of an authoritarian regime operating contrary to the Constitution of the United States and the will of free people.

Speaking of faith as if it were a commodity suggests that one group’s faith in our current leadership can only come at the expense of others who disagree with it and those adherents who support its programs. This makes anyone who follows Obama a heretic or worse yet a demon to be cast out of our midst.

Such rhetoric strikes me as childish and foolish, if not dangerous. Most of us understand faith as belief without need of evidence. To others it carries with it the additional connotation of loyalty to a certain set of beliefs, membership of a tribe or clan. Cultural norms and practices assert the need for faith in certain matters and provide opportunities for people to exhibit their shared understanding of or belief in concepts or ideals beyond rational understanding or confirmation. Despite  external reinforcement of such beliefs in this way, though, we are consistently reminded that faith is something we create and possess as individuals, not something created or destroyed by others much less something traded like baseball cards or marbles.

Despite Beck’s pronouncement, I see evidence that faith is in anything but short supply, especially among Beck and Palin’s own followers. People are all too willing to believe in things these days that simply beggar credulity — particularly as they relate to the President himself.

The sorts of rumors and innuendo circulating around the President’s own faith — lingering suggestions that he is a closeted or crypto-Muslim — suggest people are willing to buy into stereotypes and prejudices that justify their entrenched opposition to the his administration’s programs. Shared belief in such premises requires no evidence and readily dismisses statements to the contrary and any evidence that might arise.

This gives Beck and his followers permission to cast the President and his followers as evil. For me, this would be bad enough on its own, but it gives me added pause because it also gives them permission to anoint themselves as our nation’s prophets or saviors. Those who believe in them and their message will be saved, all others will suffer damnation to the eternal fires of hell.

I have little faith in hell. But I do believe in evil.

Beck and Palin may have stepped back from the precipice this weekend and softened their rhetoric rather than fan the flames of fury at the government as they have done at other times and in other venues. The crowd never seemed to approach fever pitch much less reach a rapturous frenzy. Beck’s call to faith seemed tempered much as Dr. King’s was to appeal in an effort to find favor with the broadest possible audience. Here’s hoping the faith he has in mind and the actions of his followers remains centered on the principles of peace, prudence and love of neighbor that informed the most memorable of the addresses delivered at Mr. Lincoln’s feet.

Great post! Well if faith in the persistence of greed [or the drive to have “more”] is almost close to a religion appears that both the supply and demand side are neatly balanced.

What would be of interest is to rank the nation-states of the world based on the elements of greed and rapaciousness in their foreign policy and foreign relations and then to place the US in its appropriate slot on that list. Is US consumption annually of 25% of the entire resources of the world evidence of anything that would be an indicator of intent? Or does US willingness to share its debts indicate our elemosynary spirit?

Clowns to the right of me and jokers to left. Demand is in the middle and the spirit of liberty is the spirit that’s not too sure it’s right or wrong. See what happens and measure fraud by losses. Lehman people are still complaining. Our loses were high and all I got was this lousy T-shirt. Some vacations last longer than others. Always some beach ain’t it? I’m going to blow into town like Earl and break things.

Hurricane Earl was an atypical, short-lived Category 2 hurricane that caused moderate damage throughout the Southeast United States. It formed out of a poorly organized tropical …

Organize the poor and have National Guard ready…Have a tropical drink while waiting.

How handy.

“On July 1st, 1966, I reported in to Lt Col Mike Bowen, commander of project “Office Boy” at Eielson AFB, Alaska. Confusion was rampant as that was the day of the “Falling Leaf” party. Eighteen out of thirty six crew members lost their spot promotions!”

Sometimes you report in a day late. What happened? Rampant confusion. It must of been a heck of a good party. Blame it on Old Grand-Dad.

Comment by Carbon Nano Tubes and Religious Perspective

September 2, 2010 @ 11:24 am

As I make every effort to work with those in the scientific, engineering and defense related communities who should be lauded for their indepth understanding and foresight regarding the significance of Carbon Nano Tubes and the terrific affect such technology will have on all mankind….

….the strife caused by religious intolerance here and in Europe, as well as throughout the Middle East, is far more devastating than Hurricane Earl and its wobbling a bit more to the west early today and in the next 48 hours to affect many more millions than anticipated a few days ago….

Despite so, so many Meteorologists and snd long standing climatological record keeping – see: http://www.bluehill.org and a historical look at Atlantic hurricanes as well as having the latest in dopplar radar and other instruments including of course up dated satellite information, we cannot still predict with certainty Mother Nature’s course, however we can predict with accuracy the ongoing dysfunctional adn narrow minded perspective of those professing specific religious doctrine with little tolerance towards another fellow who may indeed differ in faith.

From my perspective, this very much includes the Muslim and especially the fundamentalist Islamic clerics for it is my experience in reading history that the fundamentalist Islamic clerics teach much more hatred in their agenda with little or no tolerance for those of us carrying Biblical scripture in hand….

Whether it be the Vatican or those from the Arab states where their way is the only way, despite all the promises and the brilliance which God has gifted to mankind in being able to understand the atom, to see the future with nanotechnology and the all encompassing positive ramifications which Carbon Nano Tubes promise for the near term and distant future, mankind’s greed, his intolerance towards other, his capability to murder another in cold blood whether in the name of the Koran or the Bible, get a grip on yourselves after all thesee preceding generations who weer destined to fail as a society just as every form of manmade government since Babylon has failed to the present.

Working closely with an astute and enlightened group of valued scientists and enginnering “geeks” the future looks supercalifragilistic when referring to nanotechnology and what I see in the daily discipline of those who can see far past those who promise the killing of innocent infidels will lead to 12 virgins….Who cares…Get a life! Religion and the inherent spiritualness necessary requires repentence, not a group of “Brutes of Teheran” willing to kill its own and allow rich Persian blood to stain the streets of Tehran!

Extensively and professionally involved in Carbon Nano Tubes, nanotechnology, seeking to not necessarily embrace another, however to make an effort to respect another’s choices, another’s dignity as long as all staying within the person and not subjecting another to their way or no way –

Next, the 22nd century!

As a result of bigotry, self-agenda, lust for sex, lust for power, lust for money no matter the cost, well, my saddened perspective as my own decades roll by in the season’s of a man’s Life, can we overcome many of man’s shortcomings and understand tne brilliance of mankind, the necessity to develop and convey technological development which enhance mankind, not erode it like the “professional” politicians, the economists other than Roubini, who do not have any understanding of the plight we are in…

In my 25×7 international business development daily tasks, what I see is the endless possibilities afforded by the atom – Carbon Nano Tubes, nanotechnology…

Sure it bothers me very much as a Greek Orthodox Christian that when I walks teh streets of Jerusalem, when even within three meters of the Dome of the Rock if I am carrying a Bible in hand, simply carrying as I walk by the mosque on the way to the market, I am accosted. Please and this President and the administration believes the clerics have tolerance for others – Yea, right?

America, my (our) beloved country was founded on Judeo-Christian values and in a few short years compared with other much older cultures, we have accomplished much. We saved the world from the wrath of a German who did much the same, kill in cold blood and had little tolerance for others.

My fear is not the supply and demand and the promise of hatred towards others, intolerance for the infidel, the Christian holding his/her Bible or in prayer, the lack of tolerance towards those with differing faith, this warped agenda that the world will one day be Muslim….God is witness to all and scripture has been written with its pages turning every so quickly.

Our forefathers fled with much courage against the odds of Mother Nature in sailing across the Atlantic huddled together with the same in mind…sailing far away from those seeking oppress the individual.

While we share much of the same genetic makeup, we are different and we have individual preference. Others need not be subjected by those that see only their prospective or religious and spiritual choice.

To my colleagues involbed in extensive development, accomplishments, advancements which could not even be a fantasy of one even a few years ago, no, there is no need for a mosque at Ground Zero Mr. Mayor or Mr. President for there are over 100 mosques in New York and furthermore, 70% of Americans say no! Much like the majority of Americans who said “no” to a complete healthare revamp where most were happy with their plans and wanted fraud and corruption in the system to be addresssed.

To you Mr. President, whether you have no real birth certificate to authenticate or in fact you follow the teachings of Islam or Christianity for we will never really know who you are for you and the First Lady and Congressional members have assured that any and all information would be sealed….

Breaking news – 2nd Sept – 12:01p – Oil Rig explodes!

Well, while nearly 1 billion souls in the 21st century do not have access to a clean glass of water and in my efforts to secure investment monies to fund a collaborative of “experts” in water purification and wastewater development and while I work with much respect to promote the brilliance of those who understand the potential of mankind’s Blessings as I ramp up the marketing of accomplishments of scientists and engineers who work night and day, no matter what religion or spiritual perspective, to enhance the quality of Life for all humanity, seven helicopters, two airplanes and four boats are enroute to a location some 80miles off Louisiana as mankind’s shoddy work and lack of discipine most likely a result of a large multi-national company whose largest shareholders (themselves) are more important than our environment and community where the lives of neighbors and families are obviously not a priority.

Since the election, fioreclosures in the United States are up 30%, unemployment is at 9.5% and the next shoe to drop shortly and yes, Mr. President and your Congressional colleagues on both sides of the aisle, we do not need you, we can do better for those so empowered in the Middle East, those raping innocent people in Somalia, those killing others at their whim and in their position of power, I remind you, God is witness to all!

Now, let’s get on to Carbon Nano Tubes and further development of nanotechnology promising a better Life for all, however I am confident that with War lurking not too far ahead, mankind will again fail to heed the lessons of hostorical refelction in religious intolerance and greed which has always flickered the light of hope almost to Life’s extinction and it is only with Blessings that despite mankind’s failings and his brilliance, we may survive to one day truly understand what Peace and Love truly mean and the need to respect one another, even our differences with no need whatsoever to impose our values on another….

God Bless us all!

All guns and no ammo. Unpaid, leave. “Insurgents have turned to hit-and-run tactics to conserve their forces and ammunition, Mills said, noting the number of improvised explosive devices being used against his troops is fewer now than last spring. Also, IEDs are becoming less sophisticated, he added.” http://www.defense.gov//news/newsarticle.aspx?id=60714
Payed, stay. It seems the Taliban is using the drunk driver defense. Marines use hit-and-fun tactics. Dumb ain’t in demand. There’s a big supply.

September 3, 2010 @ 4:55 am

I deal in ammo and scrap metal. Lots of one and little of the other.

September 4, 2010 @ 6:38 am

Hit-and-fun. I’m making a career of evil here.

I plot your rubric scarab,
I steal your satellite
I want your wife to be mine
Maybe tonight, maybe tonight

I choose to steal what you chose to show
And you know I will not apologize
You’re mine for the taking
I’m making a career of evil

Pay me I’ll be your surgeon
I’d like to pick your brain
Capture you inject you
Leave you kneeling in the rain
Kneeling in the rain

Evil you can believe in. The newspaper business was a family business, now it’s corporate shills and clowns. The first family brought, bought and paid for you by pantsless-soulless XYZ Corporation. All praise the corporation and give them all you got. These banks are important and broke, so we get more nonsense for our money and little plastic cards. In corporate America stupidity is always in demand and demand is good. Demand is so high they need to borrow from China to put food on the first family table. Keep your family china safe sweethearts.

I’d like to do it to your daughter on a dirt road
And then I’d spend your ransom money,
But still I’d keep your sheep
I’d peel the mask you’re wearing,
And then rob you of your sleep
Rob you of your sleep

“”Most of the people in our society are sheep. They are kind, gentle, productive creatures who can only hurt one another by accident.” This is true. Remember, the murder rate is six per 100,000 per year, and the aggravated assault rate is four per 1,000 per year. What this means is that the vast majority of Americans are not inclined to hurt one another. Some estimates say that two million Americans are victims of violent crimes every year, a tragic, staggering number, perhaps an all-time record rate of violent crime. But there are almost 300 million Americans, which means that the odds of being a victim of violent crime is considerably less than one in a hundred on any given year. Furthermore, since many violent crimes are committed by repeat offenders, the actual number of violent citizens is considerably less than two million.

Thus there is a paradox, and we must grasp both ends of the situation: We may well be in the most violent times in history, but violence is still remarkably rare. This is because most citizens are kind, decent people who are not capable of hurting each other, except by accident or under extreme provocation. They are sheep.

I mean nothing negative by calling them sheep. To me it is like the pretty, blue robin’s egg. Inside it is soft and gooey but someday it will grow into something wonderful. But the egg cannot survive without its hard blue shell. Police officers, soldiers, and other warriors are like that shell, and someday the civilization they protect will grow into something wonderful.? For now, though, they need warriors to protect them from the predators.”

Watch out for corporate wolves and don’t scare the sheep guys. The wolves got $700 billion worth of nothing and call it security and the sheep go baa.

September 4, 2010 @ 7:13 am

“If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen, a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath, a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? What do you have then? A sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero’s path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed” WSSD

Sociopath corporate job killers. I shall walk through the valley of the shadow of death and fear no evil because I’m the worse son of a bitch there. Watch out for idiots with mega churches and phones. If you watch a little TV, watch a little less. Are the corporate eggs safe yet?

September 4, 2010 @ 7:42 am

The corporate egg. Inside it is all soft and gooey and someday it’ll make you sick as a dog. The wheat from corporate China was killing the dogs at a discount. Got a ham and beef recall in Buffalo, bad baby cribs nationally and the sheep want you to paint yourself white and go baa. 100,000 dog houses with bad China drywall. Need a wrecking bar. Big Ben is benched going dingdong for $100 million. Lindsay hit-and-run, more trouble in Hollywood. Better living through chemistry. The sheep are on pills. Rest your head on a pillow.

Game over.

Turning the page…Just did that.

The hijackers soon found they could use the media…then they found they could use the commercial jets and the media and the rest is history. People are going to get hurt or die. It’s a rough game. Colby Logic

September 4, 2010 @ 8:17 am

The man who wishes to write contemporary history must expect to be attacked for everything he writes and everything he doesn’t write.

After the event, even a fool is wise. We can’t abolish terrorism, so we may abolish mankind. This is going to take awhile. It’s looking like a long siege.

September 4, 2010 @ 8:28 am

A bunch of corporate media shills hijacked the Lincoln Memorial. They have a corporate dream. Take another pill and drop the acid theatrics morons. Between idiotic Wall Street journalism and Washington follies it can get expensive. We owe you “nothing”. That’s what is in your head. You didn’t want it in the chest. Boom boom boom!

September 4, 2010 @ 8:52 am

“Denial kills you twice. It kills you once, at your moment of truth when you are not physically prepared: you didn’t bring your gun, you didn’t train. Your only defense was wishful thinking. Hope is not a strategy. Denial kills you a second time because even if you do physically survive, you are psychologically shattered by your fear helplessness and horror at your moment of truth.”

You can get killed three times and like baseball you are out at the old ballgame. America, systematically pillaged by the corporations. Hug a cold corpse. The funeral is looking expensive. Life is still for all things affordable and it’s still life. I’m having a beer, praying for a micro-brew.
