Chaos or Community?

Filed under: Strategy — by Philip J. Palin on January 17, 2011

The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.

This was the last book written by Dr. King before his assassination. Thanks to John Comiskey for reminding us.

These are the times that try men’s souls.

-Thomas Paine, The Crisis

The United States of America, IMHO, the once and still greatest nation on planet earth, was a mere prospect. Beyond all odds, diverse people formed what they hoped to be a perfect union.

Paine also said that government in its best form is a necessary evil. The US Constitution is a celebration of mitigating that evil, i.e. limiting the power of government office holders. To that point, I perceive that American society sometimes demands of its government that which it has expressly denied, i.e. absolute power. The US Constitution affords both majority rule and minority voice.

American society, predicated on Judeo-Christian values and the precepts of the Enlightenment, celebrates the common man and the common good -all shall be heard. The Tucson events not unlike the assassinations of MLK et al threaten public access to our leaders.

Where do we go from here?

Some reflection on the Golden Rule that is found in every religion and belief system.

Some protest, tempered by the Golden rule, against that which we oppose.

Paine also said “Government in its worst form is an intolerable [government] one.”

The USG is not perfect -it needs the care and sometimes outrage of its citizenry -it needs love.

God Bless America

MLK was constantly threatened by violence. Perhaps President Obama also. No one will ever know exactly how MLK reacted to these threats.
We do know based on released FBI files that that incompetent organization viewed MLK as the threat.
