On this day in 1989 a significant solar flare impacted microchips and electrical grids across North America.

Today across Egypt this generation’s aspirations to political, social, and religious reform may be buried in internecine violence.

What’s on your mind related to homeland security?

I found this interesting on the “militarization” of police forces yesterday. Its been an ongoing topic in sociology and criminology occasionally since the 1970s.

There is certainly a current tension in organizational cultures between community oriented policing, intel-led policing, and the use (or overuse) of SWAT tactics. The quest for homeland security and the training for Mumbai-style events, active shooters, and suicide bombers certainly must also have an impact.

I am not sure where I stand yet as a former member of a SWAT team, but it should prompt some reflection for all of us.

Thank you JD and to your service as a Swat team member from all of us….

I have witnessed Swat teams in action and when it is necessary to make the call for such expertise, for the most part, often works out well and protects the community from the most dangerous. Kudos!

Carrying a badge and upholding the law may not be considered important to this current administration’s AG who seems to go out of his way as well as his boss to circumvent the Constitution, however an admirable profession requiring dedication, commitment, restraint and patience having to deal with the many idiosyncrasies of some of the most dysfunctional so I prefer having the trained Swat team readied and able to address the more acute and perilous situations which unfold from time to time.

As a pessimist in observing the continuing degradation of global peace and the disRespect towards fellow man and seeing the continued divisiveness among the populace as a direct result of Barry Obama who I believe should be under House arrest along with Ms. Hillary for suspicion in breach of faith, treason at the “Benghazi Massacre” and an eroding economic climate due to the same failed inabilities of this administration so unqualified, unfit, so narrow in perspective with focus on the race card for self-serving intent and a foreign policy the same eventually leading us into a blundering and ill-conceived foray, I believe strongly in much more police presence on our streets and of course demanding that those wearing their badge conduct themselves in the most professional manner at all times, however understanding that Life and maybe even their Life in jeopardy, so not much support for the bad guy!

I don’t think militarization of the police force is a bad idea given the lack of respect and the often challenges a police officer finds him/herself even when stopping a motor vehicle and driver for a moving violation. The stories as you well know are often troublesome….Far too many today from the tope down to the populace seem to have little respect for the law and those enforcing the laws and protecting the community.

Given it is Friday’s Free Forum, when it comes to Homeland Security it must include the lack of confidence more and more Americans here on “Main Street USA” white Caucasians who voted this half-white man in office and we have seen the WH come to the podium and interfere with a local 911 call easily and appropriately handled by the Cambridge Police department and later, at the podium talking about a trial and juror’s findings in a case involving a Latino and Black and yet, the beating of a white kid refusing to buy drugs and advising school officials, we hear from Oprah talking about her $40k pocketbook incident overseas, however from Barry Obama and Al Sharpton and to throughout the entire Civil Rights Inc, not a whisper condemning the beating on a school bus of a White kid by three Black kids and now we hear that behind the scenes, these kids beating the crap out of the white kid will get only a pat on the hand….if it was a Black kid being beaten by three White dudes, oh, CNN would be all over it!

Well, apparently Oprah who somehow got past the color of her skin and is the richest woman in the US and could be influential within her own community whereby gangs and guns and pregnancy is rampant, homes are broken….

It is unfortunate, however those who are in leadership roles continue to fail in every way and as far as Homeland Security, rising fuel prices, unemployment especially among Black youth far greater than back in ’08 and a listless jobs gain, our Homeland and Security are much in jeopardy whether from within or from the porous borders and the willingness in allowing present laws to go unenforced especially with regard to immigration. So many immigrants whose visas expired years ago and still remain the country and drive everyday without license and many look the other way….

American-born Al Qaeda militant praises Benghazi attack, urges more violence
Published August 18, 2013

Oct. 4, 2008: American Al Qaeda militant Adam Gadahn speaks in this video grab from an Internet video. (Reuters/IntelCenter)
A California-born convert to Islam is praising the killers of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in the Benghazi attacks on Sep. 11 last year, while calling for more violence against Western diplomats in the Middle East.
Al Qaeda militant Adam Gadahn, whose capture will garner a $1 million reward from the U.S. government, made the statements in a recently released video on Arabic websites frequented by terrorists, according to the SITE monitoring group.
Gadahn, indicted in California for treason and material support for Al Qaeda, called on wealthy Muslims to offer rewards for militants to kill ambassadors, citing bounties set by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
The group is offering 106 ounces of gold for the killing of the U.S. ambassador in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and $23,350 for the killing of American soldiers in the country, according to Reuters.
Gadahn previously said in 2007 that Al Qaeda would target diplomats and facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan in response to U.S.-led military action.
He is believed to be in Pakistan since 2004 and the FBI has been trying to question him, Reuters reports.
